This offseason most of the team made the sacrifice to spend some time on character and mental toughness. Why? So we have the humility to see that we can get better every day. So we care about our performance and solidify our reasons to succeed to a point where nothing erodes them. So that we can put the needs of our teammates before our own. So that we recognize that our every effort in everything we do counts. So that we can be disciplined to make the right choices and choose what we need to do instead of what we want to do. So that we can persevere when we face pain, exhaustion, and inconvenience and most importantly so that we can continue to fight even when the chips are down. So that we hold nothing back and have the courage to risk all we have in pursuit of our goals. So that we show the initiative to do what we see needs to be done for the good of the team and not just settle for doing only what is asked. So that we lead; by example in enduring pain and in pushing ourselves past our perceived limits and in words by holding each other accountable to take the character way instead of the easy way on and off the field. Finally, that we increase our awareness so we will see all the little ways we can win or lose with each rep in practice and each situation off the field. We did this so we could collectively stack up wins on campus, wins in class, wins studying, wins in each rep, wins during the season and ultimately wins in life. Each of us has a winner and loser inside. Listen to both and you will be average. Listen to the winner and follow through and you can do amazing things. It’s simply a choice. One day the dust will settle and you will know just how true these words are. At that point you will look back and feel one of two things: regret at all the times you chose to lose, or pride at all the times you chose to win. Make sure you can look back with pride.
