Character & Mental Toughness- Stop Joking Around and Get Serious

Stop joking around and get serious

You think you will win just showing up, you’re delirious

They put their time in and they know their stuff

You put no pressure on yourself and don’t do enough

They long ago made their decision

To do what it takes to make real their vision

You kept blowing it off, now you’ll find out

What a winner’s dedication is all about

They gave their best in the days long before

You think you can just bring it game time, but won’t even score

You have no clue how bad they want it

The time and pain they’ve already put in just to get it

You keep wasting time, don’t forget it

Maybe you won’t learn until you get destroyed and regret it

Stop joking around and get serious

You think you will win just showing up, you’re delirious

They put their time in and they know their stuff

You put no pressure on yourself and don’t do enough

I’m telling you now so there’s hope

Get to work, smarten up, don’t be the lazy dope

You keep taking the easy way in everything it seems

Meanwhile they do the work to reach  their dreams

You waste day after day away

They won’t let anything get in their way today

They do the man’s work while you’re being a boy

They manned up while you’ve been playing with toys

They sacrifice and do what you blow off and ignore

You lost this game bad long long before

Stop joking around and get serious

You think you will win just showing up, you’re delirious

They put their time in and they know their stuff

You put no pressure on yourself and don’t do enough

Dust my words off that’s your style

Remember for a minute, but not a long while

They keep that game in the front of their head

They go to work when you’re going to bed

Tomorrow’s victory is won today

Losers won’t do what winners do each day

So here’s your chance to burn it in

To get off your duff and start to win

To crack the playbook and learn your plays

To run the sprints and lift the weights

Here’s your chance and it’s fading fast

Start doing the work or your moment will pass

Stop joking around and get serious

You think you will win just showing up, you’re delirious

They put their time in and they know their stuff

You put no pressure on yourself and don’t do enough

In each of you is a core of pride

You can’t find it if you run and hide

You don’t want to embarrass yourself

You want a ring on your finger; a trophy for your shelf

But it ain’t happening the way you’ve been

You gotta grow up so you can show up ready to win

So make it a point to put your time in

To do whatever it takes to guarantee the win

The time is today and the moment is now

Strap on the harness; start moving the plow

Winners plant winning seeds in the days long before

Losers expect crops to pop up though the work they ignored

Stop joking around and get serious

You think you will win just showing up, you’re delirious

They put their time in and they know their stuff

You put no pressure on yourself and don’t do enough

Maybe none of this makes sense. I just put words down as I was watching students waste away their days, and players wasting away their afternoons while kids in other communities are playing D1 and getting into Ivy League schools.  I think the final straw for me today was when I asked one of our contenders for the starting QB spot who he is going to throw to on one of our pass plays.  He’s had the playbook for a month. We have a 7 on 7 tournament this coming weekend.  I knew he wouldn’t know, I knew he hadn’t looked at the playbook and I just kept walking.  Then I asked our starting QB from last season when he figured it out and really started applying himself.  He said it was after his junior basketball season when his team lost the district championship game.  He said after that loss he just made his mind up that he was going to start taking full responsibility for what he needed to do and fully apply himself.  As a senior he led our team to only the 6th winning season in 20 years.  He became an “A” student.  Why so serious?  Because that’s what it takes to win on the field and in school.
