“The reason I am so proud is because this other kid (11 year old laying on the mat) crushed our 10-11 year old. We didn’t have anyone else that had a chance against him and they asked Nicky (standing) if he would wrestle him. Granted Nick is only 8. No one else could have beat him and all the kids were hemming and hawing that they didn’t want to wrestle him. Nick said “Sure.” The other kid intimated our team. When they walked on the mat and the other kid saw my short red head son he thought it was going to be easy. At one point the kid actaully pushed Nick out of frustration and the ref had to warn the kid for poor behavior. Nick broke him and pinned him in the 3rd period. The kid just layed there and the crowd was wild…..To see this feisty red head beat the piss out of this kid was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.”– Nick’s Mom.
This coming fall we will open our football season against the #7 ranked team in the state. I will surely be showing my players this picture and telling them the story behind it. I hope our players can find the courage, heart and initiative that this 8 year old little guy from New Jersey found in himself. I hope Nick’s character and mental toughness will inspire many more. I know he has inspired me.
Don’t let fear interfere with your opportunity to do something notable. Find the courage, and you will find the way.
