Character & Mental Toughness- The Question

The question is not how to become great.  There have been players on your team that have gone on to become All-Conference, All-Area, even All-State.  There are guys who recently wore the same uniform that you wear that have gone on to play in the Chowder Bowl All Star game and have even earned scholarships to play college football.

The question is not how to become great.  In the last five years, this program has had three of its most successful seasons in a generation.  Teams from your school have gone on to Super Bowls and 10 win seasons.

The question is not how to become great.  The path to greatness has been recently travelled.  You have coaches who want nothing more than to show you the way, and a school that provides you with the facilities you need to have to be successful.  You have parents and a community that want nothing more than to cheer you on.

The question is not how to become great.  You get taught how to be great every day.

The question is do you have what it takes to be great?

What it takes is for you to have the character to do what you are coached to do, the heart to give a great effort to get better, and the mental toughness to consistently do what is asked of you even under great pressure and adversity.

Do you have what it takes?

The only one who can answer that question is you young man.  For now you answer by showing your coaches and teammates how hard you can work in the weight room and camps.  You answer by showing how consistently you can do that.

So, do you have what it takes to be great?

We have guys who get dropped off in the morning and then ride their bikes ten to fifteen miles home after they workout.   But we also have guys who live only a few streets away who can’t be bothered to lift.

We had almost 30 guys in the weight room at 6:30 AM during the first lift this summer.  Many of these guys have jobs to get to after they workout.  Yet we have guys who can’t even make the 5:30 PM lift even though they had nothing to do all day.

We have guys who read this page every single day in order to grow mentally stronger.  We have guys who have clicked on the links on the right of the page and read everything that has been shared about character and mental toughness.  We have other guys who have never looked at this page no matter how many times I have asked them.

Do you have what it takes?

The answer my young friend is that you all have what it takes.    If you haven’t found it yet, dig a little deeper.

I just want you to know what is possible.
